Because of the time setting, some may feel this book is outdated, but the picture it paints of the miseries of a teenaged boy (who wants to appear grown-up and to attract a particular new girl in the neighborhood) is timeless. Thwarted by his parents, who 'cannot understand him,' and ridiculed by his little sister, he finds humiliation and frustration at every turn. The writing is full of humor. One of my favorite passages is the one describing the fifty-year-old Mr. Parcher when he is an unwilling eavesdropper on that boy and the girl (who pretty much speaks only baby-talk) discussing "real love" ad nauseum. He tries, unsuccessfully, to keep reading Plutarch's Lives, and finally goes to bed, only to hear, now, several teenagers singing about love, his bed being only about 18 feet away from the porch where they are enjoying themselves:"Long, long he tossed, listening to the young voices singing of love; long, long he thought of love, and many, many times he spoke of it aloud, though he was alone in the room. And in thus speaking of it, he would give utterance to phrases and words probably never before used in connection with love since the world began." (That is, he swore mightily.)If you read this book, which I hope many will do, you must by no means skip ahead to the last page. The ending is quite delightful and best read as a surprise.
Amusing and timeless story but I would have enjoyed it more if the text in this edition had not been so tiny! I'm not kidding- I think the font size was 6. And I do wear reading glasses and even with good lighting it was a struggle.
An old favorite of mine, a great story full of comedy and human warmth. However, the volume I bought, published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, was cheaply made, with print so small that the entire book is condensed to 83 pages. (There are three blank, or almost blank pages at the end, making a total of 86 pages.) If I were reviewing the physical volume, I would award it only one star.
First read this in my 20's after I saw a letter from EB White recommending it for the teenage daughter of a friend. I remember wishing then I had read it during my adolescent misery. Forty years later I still think Tarkington captures the universality of teenage angst -too bad he has become one of our forgotten treasures.
Format is so bad as to be unreadable. I'm only 30 but the type was so small I gave up. And it's not like this is a long book. Waste of money.
I first read this book when I was 17 and was taken with the humor. Now, having reread it, I see the elements that were background to Booth Tarkington's time, including casual racism and use of the "N" word.It remains an entertaining, occasionally hilarious, story of an innocent time when teens idealized their crushes. It would be interesting to see what contemporary high schoolers think of it.
print job was unreadable. filed for refund
I read this book in high school, and I still remember being completely drawn into, and consumed by the summer heat, and a woolen suit. That's nostalgia.
