Old School: Life in the Sane Lane, by Bill O'Reilly Bruce Feirstein

Old School is in session....You have probably heard the term Old School, but what you might not know is that there is a concentrated effort to tear that school down. It’s a values thing. The anti–Old School forces believe the traditional way of looking at life is oppressive. Not inclusive. The Old School way may harbor microaggressions. Therefore, Old School philosophy must be diminished. Those crusading against Old School now have a name: Snowflakes. You may have seen them on cable TV whining about social injustice and income inequality. You may have heard them cheering Bernie Sanders as he suggested the government pay for almost everything. The Snowflake movement is proud and loud, and they don’t like Old School grads. So where are you in all this?Did you get up this morning knowing there are mountains to climb―and deciding how you are going to climb them? Do you show up on time? Do you still bend over to pick up a penny? If so, you’re Old School.Or did you wake up whining about safe spaces and trigger warnings? Do you feel marginalized by your college’s mascot? Do you look for something to get outraged about, every single day, so you can fire off a tweet defending your exquisitely precious sensibilities? Then you’re a Snowflake. So again, are you drifting frozen precipitation? Or do you matriculate at the Old School fountain of wisdom? This book will explain the looming confrontation so even the ladies on The View can understand it. Time to take a stand. Old School or Snowflake. Which will it be?

have never read a book by Bill O'Reilly and Bruce Feirstein. I really didn't know what to expect but the first half had me laughing out loud. It was very similar to my childhood in many ways...thus "old school." At one part I thought, wow, this is like something out of the last century and then realized that it WAS from the last century. The century I grew up in. The book flips authors from chapter to chapter so a bit of a different perceptive comes through but more similarities than not...one raised Catholic and one raised Jewish. Both from working class families with parents who grew up in the depression and WWII. They knew right from wrong and expected you to as well...not be taught, just know. The value of a penny was ingrained as well.As the book progresses it tells and shows society changing and the things that influenced the changes. Some changes were good and some not so much but all culminating in a (hopefully) subculture of youth that need safe spaces , trigger warnings, live with or are supported by their parents well into their 30's. They label words macro or micro aggressions --yes we are talking about WORDS. The people who believe in the first amendment...well for themselves and those that agree with them 100%Anyway, I think age might determine if you like or hate this book but I enjoyed it very much.

OLD SCHOOLLife in the Sane LaneBill O'Reilly &Bruce FeirsteinReviewed by Author Roy MurryIt is not often that people learn from the past, even rarer that they draw the correct conclusions from it. I paraphrase Henry Kissinger who, by the way, is not one of my favorite people. However, his words are related to O'Reilly and Feirstein's thesis on human conditioning. With the loss of truthful history and discipline in our schools, Old School values of the past are in the most cases lost in American culture. The authors wove into this book their knowledge of their cultural growth intellectually, using short stories of each families' past. Many of those stories resonated with me. I am a Baby Boomer who lived through the same period, albeit I served in Vietnam where my core values changed somewhat. Participating in war does that to you.Snowflakes, however, live in the now and won't look at the psychological development of the past to add values to their life, unless there are core family values already installed. It’s an endeavor losing ground, according to the authors.Unfortunately, this declarative historic on values will be only read by Old Schoolers and maybe psych majors who want to understand human conditioning. Americans are being conditioned at a faster rate today than in the 60s, 70s, and 80s via sound bites. The authors allude to this conditioning.Mr. O'Reilly and Feirstein have put together a fast-moving book with laughs and interesting observations. However, its basic theories, although somewhat factual, won't work in today's world. Few young Americans read history, Snowflakes won’t.I enjoyed the read because I am Old School.

I chose the highest rating because the message of this book is invaluable. Traditional values and principles are still important. These were passed down to us by our old school parents who believed that America is a land of opportunity where anyone can be successful by hard work, determination and diligence, by the grace of God. The break down of the differences between OS and snowflake and illustrations provided were factual with "no spin" and humorous, providing a clear definition and differentiation. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a person of substance for the common good and betterment of themselves and society as a whole. Be true and faithful, work hard, do not sell out cheaply and take the easy way out. Be a person of substance who contributes and is not just a consumer st other people's expense. Stick to your principles and personal convictions and do not waffle for personal gain. So many good lessons to learn and not enough space here. Recommend the reading of this book by anyone who wants a clearer understanding of the differences between OS and snowflakes and lessons-learned to promote more harmonious relationships and mutual respect for each other to help make the World a better place for everyone.

As pure literature, I probably should have rated this somewhat lower. However, given how disgusted I am with a generation of whiners, this should be required reading for every parent. If I had acted the way the current crop of college "students" does, my tuition would have been cut off and I would have been given a boot out the door by my dad to go find a job and learn to deal with reality.Micro-aggressions, trigger warnings and the like should really play well when trying to earn a living. NOTTTTTTT!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It brought back memories of my childhood. My parents were working folks, and dad a WWII vet.My brother, sister and I were taught manners, we were disciplined, we learned responsibility, and accountability. We were also tau g h t that life was not fair, and there were consequences for our actions. Even though there were time I did like them, my parents never lied to us. They weren't overly concerned about our self esteem, "if you wanted to trophy, maybe you should have practiced more, tried harder."O'Reilly and Feirstein have struck the nail squarely on the head. My parents were parent's, they did not try to be our friends.Great read!Gary Moore
